Who is Catherine Kerr?

NESA-Accredited Proficient Teacher, Writer & Mentor

I am a passionate educator with over a decade of experience across leading independent and selective schools, including Hornsby Girls, Barker College, Pymble Ladies' College, Ravenswood School for Girls, Loreto Normanhurst, and Newington College. I have a proven track record of mentoring students to the top of their cohorts, including the Dux of Cheltenham Girls High School.

As a former student of Abbotsleigh, I achieved a UAI of 93.2, giving me firsthand understanding of the demands of academic excellence. With a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and a Graduate Diploma in Education, I replace the guesswork of English with a structured, replicable framework. I focus on building the analytical mindset and sophisticated expression required by HSC markers.

Beyond traditional academia, I am a writer and former Drama and English Coordinator at the Australian Performing Arts Grammar School. This creative background provides an unparalleled edge for students undertaking Major Works in Extension 2 English. Furthermore, my experience as a Debating Coordinator—leading teams to the state finals of the Premiere Debating Challenge—directly informs my approach to teaching persuasive writing and oral assessments.

How my four-step method improves your English marks

English is often viewed as overly subjective and frustrating. I break it down into a clear, structured process. My four-step framework gives students a reliable method for unpacking complex texts, structuring their thoughts, and writing with clarity and sophistication.

Core Metalanguage

Mastering the specific literary and cinematic techniques required by the NESA syllabus to elevate your analysis.

02

Textual Deconstruction

Utilising a step-by-step essay formula: sophisticated expression / precise examples / critical context.

Lessons are available both online and face-to-face. You can choose online sessions via Google Meet, or in-person sessions at my Katoomba studio or in your home. I travel for free within 10km of my studio, covering local Blue Mountains towns including Katoomba, Leura, Wentworth Falls, Bullaburra, Lawson, Hazelbrook, Medlow Bath, and Blackheath.

How does payment and scheduling work?

You can reschedule your lesson to a makeup slot later that week if you provide at least 48 hours notice. Cancellations made within 48 hours will forfeit the lesson fee for that week.
